Italian Baroque Giltwood Wall Mirror, late 17th / early 18th century (circa 1690–1720)

Italian Baroque Giltwood Wall Mirror, late 17th / early 18th century (circa 1690–1720)

A richly theatrical yet beautifully proportioned Italian Baroque wall mirror, centred on an oval mercury-silvered plate and framed by finely carved flowering foliage. Above, an exuberant pierced crest rises in bold, scrolling acanthus, centred by a pronounced floral rosette — deeply undercut and powerfully three-dimensional, with a wonderful sense of movement and shadow.

The surface retains the warmth and depth associated with traditional Italian gilding: gesso over red bole, finished with water-gilded gold leaf, allowing the frame to glow and catch light across every contour. The original plate survives with its characteristic, time-softened brilliance and gentle foxing/oxidation, creating the shimmering, atmospheric quality that only an early mirror can bring.

Small but undeniably commanding on the wall — a sculptural object as much as a mirror, and an instant lift to an interior.
