Pair of Italian Silver-Leaf Mecca Altar Pricket Candlesticks c.1750

Pair of Italian Silver-Leaf Mecca Altar Pricket Candlesticks c.1750

A magnificent pair of 18th-century Italian altar candlesticks, richly carved in wood and finished in the traditional mecca technique — silver leaf laid over gesso and bole, then toned with a translucent amber glaze to create a warm, gilded lustre.

The baluster stems rise from scrolled tripod feet, their generous profiles and architectural rhythm typical of Northern Italian Baroque and early Rococo church furnishings. Each retains its original iron pricket and drip tray. The reverse sides are traditionally left plain, an authentic detail confirming their ecclesiastical origin.

The surfaces show an exceptional patina — the silver leaf softly burnished by time, the glaze gently ambered, and traces of bole visible at the high points. Together they embody the atmospheric depth that only centuries of candlelight can create.

Provenance: Private Italian collection.

Condition: Minor wear and restorations consistent with age. Original prickets and drip trays.
