Venetian Lacquered Tray in the Rococo Style Italy, circa 1860–1880

Venetian Lacquered Tray in the Rococo Style Italy, circa 1860–1880

A beautifully decorative Venetian lacquered tray inspired by the Rococo splendour of mid-18th-century Venice. The shaped wooden tray is richly painted in polychrome tones of ochre, coral and verdigris, centred by a bouquet of summer flowers framed within scrolling cartouches. The surface decoration is highlighted with gilded and embossed gesso work, giving the illusion of tooled metalwork beneath translucent varnish.

The reverse retains its original oxide-green finish typical of 19th-century Venetian lacquer workshops. A fine and authentic example of the Neo-Rococo revival style that flourished in Venice and Florence during the later 19th century, when artisans recreated the exuberant designs of the Serenissima’s golden age for Grand Tour collectors.

Condition: Excellent decorative condition with expected craquelure and age-wear to the lacquer, commensurate with age and use. Structurally sound and beautifully patinated.
